Travellers, agents in fix as crisis at Jet Airways deepens further

With uncertainty looming large over the Jet Airways’ future and travel operators being asked to cancel bookings till April 30, passengers who had planned in advance are in a fix.Not only will the passengers have to bear the cancellation fee, they will also have to wait for the refund amount.According to travel operators in Rajkot, more than 55% passengers who had booked tickets in May and June have applied for cancellation.The passengers and travel agents are in fix as they are not getting refund back in time. As a result, a major chunk of their money has got blocked.Rajkot-based businessman Devrat Shah had planned a trip abroad with family this summer. He had booked tickets for four people under the Jet Value Deal to Canada in June at discounted rate. For this, he had paid Rs 4.1 lakh in February.But with the crisis looming large over Jet Airways, Shah has decided to cancel the tickets and book a ticket with another airlines. “Jet Airways has deducted Rs 94,000 as cancellation charges and I have to pay Rs 72,000 more than what I had paid in February for purchasing a ticket from another airlines. I did it because I don’t want to take any risk. I know from past experience that if I will book tickets at the last moment I will end up paying twice the price,” Shah told TOI.But I am yet to receive refund from Jet Airways and I have already paid for the tickets to the other airline. So, I have spent Rs 9 lakh and am awaiting refund from Jet Airways,” Shah said. He is not the only one suffering due to the crisis at Jet Airways.Chief executive of Trans Globe Travels Sanjay Mehta said, “In past few days, nearly 55% customers who had booked tickets for May and June have opted for cancellation and are booking with other airlines.”“The problem is that people are asking us to book tickets with the refund from Jet. But Jet Airways is not issuing refunds. So, we are in a fix. We also have to face the wrath of the customers,” said Mehta.
