Rajkot: Trusting her widowed daughter-in-law and grandson proved to be costly for a 65-year-old woman in Junagadh as the duo siphoned off Rs 22 lakh from her bank account.The victim, Rani Sondarvas eldest son Madha died in a road accident two years ago. To support her financially, Sondarvas brother gave her a parcel of land in the Sarasva village of Veraval taluka, police said.She sold this land for Rs 30 lakh and deposited Rs 24 lakh in her account with a nationalized bank.Meanwhile, her daughter-in-law Joshna and her son Krushik, who live in Adipur town of Kutch, set their eyes on this money.Taking advantage of the fact that the old woman couldnt read or write, Joshna lied to her that she would get the life insurance money for Madhas death. Joshna told her mother-in-law that the insurance money is given to the widow of the deceased, but her name would have to be added as a joint account holder in the bank.An unsuspecting Sondarva immediately agreed thinking that the insurance money would be useful to the widow and her son. Joshna then took her to the bank and Sondarva gave her thumb impression on the form for adding a person as a joint holder.When the formalities were completed, Joshna even applied for a new chequebook. On getting it, she withdrew Rs 22 lakh out of the total Rs 24 lakh from the account without the knowledge of Sondarva.When Sondarva visited the banks branch, she realized that the money had been withdrawn and that she had been cheated.The fraud happened in April and she persuaded the duo to return the money as she had no other source of income. She also submitted an application for complaint but requested the Maliya Hatina police not to lodge an FIR as she was hopeful that the duo would return the money.
