Thakor Sena tries to disrupt milk supply, many detained

Palanpur: Hundreds of Thakor Sena members were detained in north Gujarat and Ahmedabad on Wednesday when they tried to stop vehicles carrying milk to various dairies as part of their 'Doodh Bandhi' protest to demand farm loan waiver for farmers.In Ahmedabad and Sabarkantha, many Thakor Sena members poured hundreds of litres of milk on the roads.At least 30 were detained near Sabar Dairy in Himmatnagar when they tried to stop milk tankers on the highway. In Kherol village of Talod taluka, milk producers themselves poured huge quantity of milk on the roads. "All milk producers in Kherol have supported the Doodh Bandhi protest and refrained from supplying milk to the mandalis," said Raju Patel, local Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leader.Thakor Sena, which is led by Alpesh Thakor, had submitted a memorandum to the Sabarkantha collector on Monday and said that they would resort to 'Doodh Bandhi' protest to press for their various demands including loan waiver. PAAS has lent support to Alpesh's call for this protest.In Mehsana too, around 50 Thakor Sena members were detained when they tried disrupt supplies at Doodhsagar Dairy."By resorting to this protest, we want to awaken the government to our demand of loan waiver and other issues faced by the farmers," said Hitendrasinh Zala, president of Thakor Sena, Sabarkantha.While Thakor Sena claimed that no milk was supplied to the local mandalis in around 40 villages, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the apex body of all dairy cooperatives, said the protest had no impact on the milk collection in any of the 18,500 village milk cooperatives in the state.Urging people not to heed to rumours of milk shortage, GCMMF managing director R S Sodhi said, "Our milk collection in Gujarat was 144 lakh litres on Tuesday and it has increased to 146 lakh litres across Gujarat on Wednesday. Our sales in Ahmedabad city also has not been affected at all. We are selling 15 lakh litres of milk per day in Ahmedabad and 48 lakh litres per day across the state of Gujarat.""The 36 lakh milk producers of Gujarat who are affiliated to 18,500 village cooperative societies and 18 district cooperative milk producer unions are owners of this organization and the Amul brand. Our farmers in Gujarat get the highest milk prices across India and the weekly payment is to the tune of Rs 450 crore. They have built this organization by hard work over the last 70 years and they will never allow any consumer to face any hardship by going on strike," Sodhi said in an official statement.
