Train engine catches fire, no casualty

RANCHI: The engine of Ranchi-Lohardaga passenger train with 300 people on board caught fire on Thursday. The incident happened at Nagjua railway station around 6am, eyewitnesses said. This is the first passenger train run on an electric-engine on the 70 km Ranchi-Lohardaga route. "The train was about to leave Nagjua when there were sparks in the overhead wire. This caused a short-circuit in the engine's electrical system and triggered the fire," an eyewitness said.The motormen jumped out and rushed to Nagjua railway station for fire extinguishers.

The train had left Ranchi for Lohardaga at 5am. This is the first passenger train run on an electric-engine on the 70 km Ranchi-Lohardaga route."The train was about to leave Nagjua when there were sparks in the overhead wire. The live wire of 25,000KV snapped and fell on the engine's roof. This caused a short-circuit in the engine's electrical system and triggered the fire," an eyewitness said.The motormen jumped out and rushed to Nagjua railway station for fire extinguishers. "The loco-pilot and his assistant responded quickly and doused the fire before it could spread. A major accident was averted due to their presence of mind," a senior officer of the Ranchi division of south-eastern railway said, adding that no one was injured in the mishap.
