Jamshedpur: As many as 56 girls of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya residential school in Manjhgaon block of West Singhbhum ran away from the campus on the wee hours of Wednesday to protest against the education department’s decision to remove four contractual teachers. The teachers were removed over poor performance of the school in the matriculation examination in March.Police deployed a search team to trace the girls soon after the news about them leaving the building spread. The school officials told police that the girls left the campus on the pretext of going for their morning walks.Sources said at least seven girls, who hailed from nearby villages, were traced and brought back to the school. The girls told school officials that they were upset about the removal of four contractual teachers and left the campus in protest.The four teachers — Manju Birua, Md Shams Tabrez, Banja Teligana and Poonam Malik — were removed by the district education office following unsatisfactory performance of the school at the board examinations held in March. If four teachers are removed on top of that then there will be no one to conduct classes and finish the syllabus,” a Class X student said.West Singhbhum superintendent of police Kranthi Kumar said a joint search exercise was launched by police and the school administration to trace the girl students to bring them back. “We think the girls have left for their homes. However, our team is trying to trace them and bring them back to school,” the SP said.School warden Sangeeta Kumari said, “The education department wanted replacement of the four teachers. There was no need for the girls to take such a decision in haste.”
