CID checks documents of 88 NGOs for misappropriations

Sources said during the operation, the CID has detected several missing documents related to the NGOs' activities. We will study them to find out if the funds received by the NGOs from offshore agencies were being used properly or not. RANCHI: The criminal investigation department 's searches in state-based non-government organisations (NGOs) for Foreign Currency Regulation Act (FCRA) violations continued on Sunday with documents of 88 organisations being collected for scrutiny.Police said all NGOs receiving funds from foreign agencies were being searched, stating that the organisations received crores of rupees to carry out welfare activities.Additional director general of police Ajay Kumar Singh said, "The CID has taken many documents for examination from the offices of the NGOs. The organisations were ordered to submit these missing documents, the sources added.The searches, however, took a political hue with Congress leaders claiming that the raids were being carried out against organizations run by Christian missionaries.State media-in-charge of Congress, Rajesh Thakur, said the CID has become active all of a sudden against NGOs operated by Christian missionaries.

"There are many burning issues on which the department has not done enough so far," he said.The sources said the searches are on to verify registration details, date of establishment, areas of operation, office bearers, source of funding pre and post FCRA registration, income and expenditure details for the last five years and bank account details.
