Over 12,000 near Steel City to get piped water soon

The state drinking water and sanitation department has approved a water project, expected to cost Rs 9.5 crore and be operational in 12 months.“A state-based private agency has been awarded the job of preparing the detailed project report (DPR) and the construction work will begin as soon as the report is approved,” said Shishir Soren, an executive engineer with DWSD’s Jamshedpur division. Jamshedpur: The World Bank-aided Rs 237 crore Bagbera Gramin Jalapurti Yojna and Chota Govindpur Jalapurti Yojna is likely to be operational by August following a visit by a high-level team on Sunday.Superintendent engineer of drinking water and sanitation department in Jamshedpur Sadanand Mandal said, “Following approval from the World Bank the project is likely to be completed in the next five months.”Once it is operational, more than 12,000 residents of Luabasa and 13 other villages on the outskirts of the Steel City will soon start receiving piped water as the government. Villagers in Luabasa, Dhanchatani , Khairbani and Kesikudar, among others, had threatened to disrupt the World Bank-aided project if no alternative arrangement for supply of clean water was made for their villages.“Given that the intake well of the Chota Govindpur water project is located on the banks of the Kharkhai river in Luabasa, people were angry on not finding the names of their villages in the DPR of the project,” said S K Jha, a local.According to DWSD officials, a water tank with a daily capacity of 6.5 lakh litres will be built in Dhanchatani, while an intake well will come up at Luabasa.
