Trade unions call 3-day strike in CIL coal mines over wages

Dhanbad: All the five central trade unions including BMS, INTUC, CITU, AITUC and HMS have given a call for a total strike in all the Coal India (CIL) subsidiaries on October 5, 6 and 7 against the alleged move by the Coal India management for curtailment of wages as agreed upon under National Coal Wage (NCW) agreement XI. Though the chief labour commissioner has convened a negotiation meeting with representatives of the unions in Delhi on Wednesday the union leaders are slated to meet CIL chairman after that. The union leaders are determined to strike if the CIL management resorts to make any amendment in the wage agreement.Giving this information BMS Leader K P Gupta and INTUC leader Brajendra Prasad Singh said, Though the CIL workers are getting salary and allowances as per the NCW XI agreement reached on June 20 last, we have come to know that the CIL management is planning to curtail wages and pay salaries as per NCW X. If the CIL management moves forward with its plan, coal workers would strike all over the country as per the decision taken by our central leadership, they added.A meeting of the local representatives of the unions was held in BMS office on Monday under the chairmanship of A K Jha of INTUC wherein it was decided to hold public meetings at all the regional offices of BCCL on September 28, 29, 30 and October 2 and demonstrations at regional offices on October 3 to mobilize workers. The joint front of trade unions would organize a convention at Koyla Nagar community hall on October 4. A committee of two representatives each from the five unions has been formed to ensure success of the strike. Talks between the UAW and automakers continue.Trade union worker attacked for remark on mans eye conditionA trade union worker in Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram, was attacked with stones by two workers from another trade union after he asked one of them to wear sunglasses for conjunctivitis. The incident occurred when the worker, Rajan, suggested the precaution to prevent the spread of the disease. The two workers, Anil Kumar and Chandran, allegedly abused and attacked Rajan, causing him injuries. A case has been registered against the assailants.Cauvery dispute: All-party MP delegation led by Duraimurugan meets Union ministerA delegation of all party MPs led by water resources minister Duraimurugan met Union jal shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and sought the Centres intervention in securing Tamil Nadus share of Cauvery water. The Cauvery water management authority has ordered Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs of water for 15 days, but Tamil Nadu demanded 12,500 cusecs on a pro-rata basis. The delegation complained that Karnataka has not been releasing water as instructed. Karnatakas reservoirs have a combined storage of 53tmcft, while their future requirement is estimated to be 106tmcft.
