Sandip Kumar Kar, Executive Director (RDCIS), took charge as the head of R&D Center for Iron & Steel (RDCIS), SAIL; with his predecessor N. Banerjee superannuating on 31st March, 2024. An M.Tech. from NIT (Durgapur), he joined SAIL in 1991 as MT(T) in Alloy Steel Plant (ASP), Durgapur. After spending around 28 years mainly in the Research & Control pursuits at ASP, he was promoted to Chief General Manager (Quality) at Bhilai Steel Plant. Later in 2022, he was given the additional charge of SMS-3 at BSP, Bhilai.  In 2023 he won the prestigious Chairmans R&D Award for Excellence for introduction of innovative techniques for strengthen SAIL in market position. The same year he was promoted as ED and transferred to RDCIS. Kar at his stint at ASP, Durgapur was actively involved in Armoured Quality steel for defense applications like SPADE, JACKAL and different qualities of stainless steel through the VOD-AOD route. He also played an instrumental role in development & approval (from RDSO) of 1175HT rails. He helped in successful conversion rolling of 3 lots (115T) of MIDHANI MDN 250 forged Plates in order to supply around 35000 T of DMR 249A ship building quality plates to the Indian Navy for surface applications. Also, NABL accreditation as per ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 was given under his leadership to Mechanical Testing Lab-2, CCL and Metallography sections of Research and Control lab without any consultancy. He also has undergone the coveted Advanced program in Strategic Management in Business Excellence at Bocconi, Italy.
