Women candidates in fray this Lok Sabha elections

In the ongoing Lak Sabha elections, various political parties from across the State have fielded some old and some new faces to woo voters. The General Assebmly elections which started in Jharkhand on May 13 will be conducted in four phases. INDIA bloc comprising of Congress, JMM and RJD has given tickets tofour women candidates while the BJP is fielding three, Geeta Koda (40) Wife of former Chief Minister Madhu Koda, Geeta Koda (40) who recently switched over to the Bharatiya Janta Part from Congress is contesting from Singhbhum in the Lok Sabha elections. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Koda had defeated the then Jharkhand BJP president Laxman Gilua by over 70,000 votes in Singbhum, a reserved seat for scheduled tribes (ST) and became the first woman to win the constituency. Koda became the youngest MLA in the Jharkhand Assembly in 2009 from the Jagannathpur constituency. Jobha Majhi The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has decided to field four- time MLA and former cabinet minister Joba Majhi (60) in the Singhbhum Lok Sabha seat. Majhi who hails from the Santhal community is mobilizing people to raise the issue of former Chief Minister Hemant Sorens arrest as an insult to the tribal community. Majhi has served as a cabinet minister during the Babulal Marandi and Arjun Munda government when she had contested as an independent candidate. She was also a cabinet minister in the Hemant Soren led government till January 2024. Anupama Singh (38) For its Dhanbad seat, this election the Congress has decided to field a face who has not been directly associated with active politics- Anupama Singh. Singhs biggest identity till now is that of her husband Jaimangal Singh alias Anup Singh who is a Congress MLA from Bermo in Bokaro district. Interestingly, apart from seasoned politicians, Anupamas brother-in-law and Youth Congress leader Kumar Gaurav was also involved in the race for the ticket to this seat.  For this seat, Singh will have a direct contest with her BJP counterpart Dhullu Mahto. Sita Soren Sita Soren is the BJPs candidate from Dumka constituency this election. Former Chief Minister Hemant Sorens sister-in-law and window of his elder brother Durga Sore, Sita Soren recenttly quit Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and joined hands with the Bhartiya Janta Party in Jharkhand. Soren was first elected as the MLA from Jama in 2019 and later was appointed as JMMs National General Secretary. She has also won the Jharkhand Legislative Elections from Jama in 2014 and 2019. In her resignation letter addressed to JMM party supermo and father-in-law Shibu Soren, Sitra expressed being sidelined from the family and the partys failure to provide adequate support to her and her family. Annapurna Devi Annapurna Devi (54) is a distinguished politician with a career spanning over two decades and is also the BJP candidate from Koderma in the on-going Lok Sabha elections. She was initially a member of Rashtriya Janta Dal before joining hands with the BJP. In 2021, Devi was appointed as the Minister of State for Education in the Modi government. Devi began her political creer as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Koderma constituency from 1998 to 2014. Yashaswini Sahay A political newbie and daughter of former Union Minister Subodhkant Sahay and TV artist Rekha Sahay, Yashaswini Sahay is the face of the Congress from Ranchi this election. Upon completing her education in law, Sahay has been practicing in Mumbai and is also associated with the Kailash Satyarthi foundation. The budding politician aims to make model villages in the constituency and turn the State Capital into a metropolitan city.
