Raghubar Das slams State Govt over PESA delay

  • | Friday | 30th May, 2025

Former Chief Minister Raghubar Das attacked the State government and called it an incompetent government. Addressing journalists at the BJP state office, Das said that the law is being torn apart in this government because this government is incompetent, helpless, because it is a corrupt government. Calling the JMM/Congress government anti-tribal, he said that the Congress and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha are conducting separate agitations on the issue of Sarna Dharma Code to derail the PESA law. He said that the Hemant government is not implementing the PESA law in the state due to fear of people of foreign religion. They feel that if the PESA law is implemented then their government will be in danger. This government is depriving the poor tribals of their rights to save its government. Expressing displeasure over the non-implementation of the PESA law, former CM Raghuvar Das said that its draft started being made in 2016 during BJP  government, which was completed in 2019 and preparations were being made to take it to the cabinet. Then the government was formed in the state under the leadership of Hemant Soren and discussions started on it which are continuing till date. He said that PESA has been implemented for the tribal areas included in the fifth schedule in other states of the country. But in Jharkhand, the government is still keeping it hanging. The situation is so bad that the government has not been able to finalize the draft of PESA for five and a half years. Last year, a big meeting was held with the top officials of the Government of India and the Panchayati Raj Department of the state regarding the PESA law. There was no result in it. After that, recently once again people were asked for their opinion on it, in such a situation the government is only doing the work of hanging it. Raghubar Das expressed displeasure over the non-implementation of PESA law in the state and said that the next generation of tribals will never forgive Hemant Soren for this. He appealed to the state government to empower the tribals of the state by passing the PESA law from the cabinet without delay. Former Union Minister Sudarshan Bhagat, who was present in the press conference, said that Congress-JMM is misleading the tribal society in the name of Sarna Code. He said that this is the same Congress party which had removed the tribal code in the 1961 census. He said that in 2012, during the UPA government, in response to a question asked by him in the Lok Sabha, the then minister and the Home Ministry had outrightly rejected the demand for Sarna Code, calling it impractical, which is on record today. He said that Congress-JMM is not concerned about saving the religion and culture of the tribal society. They only do vote bank and appeasement politics. Media in-charge Shiv Pujan Pathak, spokesperson Ramakant Mahato, co-in-charge Ashok Baraik were also present in the press conference.
