No pad waste for two years: Dhatkidih emerges as zero-waste role model

On the occasion of World Menstrual Hygiene Day Week, a unique workshop titled Period and Science was held under the open sky beneath a tamarind tree in Patherdih village of Ghatshila. The initiative, jointly organized by Upgraded Middle School Dhatkidih and social organization Nishchay Foundation, aimed to spread awareness on menstrual hygiene while promoting science education among adolescent girls and women from rural and underprivileged communities. The workshop was led by former students of Dhatkidih School — Lilmani Munda and Moumita Murmu — and featured Tarun Kumar, popularly known as the Padman of Jharkhand, as the main speaker. He explained in detail the importance of menstrual hygiene, proper nutrition during adolescence, safe sanitary practices, and the science behind menstruation. He also touched on the harmful effects of child marriage and the positive social changes resulting from girls education. To ensure every participant could understand the session clearly, Lilmani translated Taruns message into Bengali, while Moumita translated it into Santhali. This multi-lingual approach allowed for inclusive and impactful communication with rural women. One of the highlights of the event was the distribution of eco-friendly reusable sanitary pads under Project Bala to all participating girls and women. This sustainable solution has already been adopted widely in nearby Dhatkidih village, where almost all women have been using reusable pads for the past two years. As a result, no pad waste is generated from the village, setting a powerful example of zero-waste menstrual hygiene management. The event saw the participation of over 50 women and girls and was attended by Sajid Ahmed, Headmaster of UMV Dhatkidih, and Malti Murmu, President of the School Management Committee, among others. Encouraged by the success, the school and Nishchay Foundation now plan to expand this campaign to every village in the schools catchment area, ensuring all adolescent girls and women are empowered with knowledge and sustainable solutions. The school has also been recognized for its continued efforts in keeping students engaged in education and social awareness activities even during long holidays. This grassroots initiative is not just about health — its about empowerment, environment, and education.
