Rare achalasia cardia surgery performed at Medicant Hospital

A rare and complex surgery for Achalasia Cardia was recently conducted by Dr. Chandan Seth, consultant in the ENT department at Medicant Hospital, Bokaro. The patient had been struggling for nearly one and a half years with persistent difficulties in digesting both solid and liquid foods.   Upon evaluation, Dr. Seth diagnosed her with Achalasia Cardia—a rare esophageal motility disorder affecting about 1 in 150,000 people. Often mistaken for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), this condition is characterized by symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, heartburn, chest pain, coughing, belching, weight loss, and vomiting. These symptoms tend to progress gradually if left untreated.   To address the condition, the patient underwent a Laparoscopic Hellers Cardiomyotomy with Anterior Dor Fundoplication under general anesthesia. The surgery was successfully performed without complications, and the patient was discharged after two days of observation. She is now recovering well and has resumed normal eating.   This rare procedure marks a significant milestone for Medicant Hospital as it is the first time such a surgery has been performed in Bokaro. Dr. Chandan Seth emphasized the importance of accurate diagnosis and timely intervention, adding that the hospital is committed to delivering advanced, patient-centric care.
