3 Bangladeshi nationals escape from Hazaribagh Central Jail

  • | Tuesday | 10th June, 2025

Three Bangladeshi nationals, including two women, escaped from the detention centre located in the Jayaprakash Narayan Central Jail premises in Hazaribagh, officials said on Monday. The escape, which reportedly took place late Friday night or early Saturday morning, has triggered alarm within the local administration of Hazaribagh. All three prisoners are foreign nationals who were detained on charges of living illegally in India. The absconding persons have been identified as Reena Khan alias Fina Devi, Nazmul, and Nipah Akhtar Khushi. Following the incident, police have launched raids at several locations and issued alerts to neighbouring districts. As soon as the incident was revealed, the police and security agencies became active and the search operation was intensified. The three escaped prisoners have been identified as follows; Reena Khan alias Fina Devi - Resident: Ghazipur, Dhaka, Bangladesh. This prisoner was transferred from Jamtara Jail to Hazaribagh Open Jail on 4 February 2022. Identification marks: Mole under the nose and wound mark on the right hand. Nipah Akhtar Khushi – Resident: Chattgram, Bangladesh. This female prisoner was brought to Hazaribagh from Hotwar, Ranchi Jail on 28 September 2024. Identification marks: Mole on the right palm and below the left elbow. Mohammad Nazmul Hang – Resident: Bagerhat, Bangladesh. This male prisoner was brought to Hazaribagh from Dumka Jail on 1 March 2025. Identification marks: Mole on the left side of the forehead and a wound mark on the left leg. The three prisoners were first kept in different jails and later they were shifted to the Open Jail Holding Camp "Detention Center" in Hazaribagh. When an attempt was made to get a response from the jail administration in this entire matter, it was found that the jail superintendent had gone to Delhi on leave. This incident has once again exposed the security system of the jail. It is noteworthy that in the last two months, two prisoners have committed suicide in this jail. These continuous incidents have not only raised questions on the functioning of the jail administration, but concerns are also being raised on how such a lapse can happen in the surveillance of foreign nationals. Now it remains to be seen when these escaped prisoners will be arrested and who will be held responsible for this lapse. This is not the first such incident at the Hazaribagh detention centre. On March 8, 2021, two Bangladeshi nationals, Mohammad Javed alias Noor and Mohammad Zahid Hussain, escaped by breaking window bars. Later, on September 13, 2021, a Myanmar national, Mohammad Abdullah, also fled from the same facility. The recurring nature of such incidents has raised serious concerns about the security arrangements at the detention centre.
