  • | Friday | 20th June, 2025

In a significant stride towards self-reliance in the defence sector, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking and Indias largest steelmaker, has supplied the entire requirement of special steel for the Indian Navys newly commissioned vessel, INS Arnala. This Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) is Indias first indigenously designed and built ship of its kind and was formally inducted into naval service on June 18.   SAIL also provided the complete requirement of special steel for the remaining seven ASW-SWC corvettes currently under construction by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), underscoring its critical role in advancing domestic defence manufacturing.   This achievement reaffirms SAILs commitment to the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by reducing dependence on steel imports for strategic sectors. The company has previously contributed special-grade steel to other major naval assets such as INS Vikrant, INS Vindyagiri, INS Nilgiri, and INS Surat, strengthening its legacy as a reliable partner in Indias defence modernization.
