Rebuilding Lives, One Hand at a Time: Holding Hands – The Journey of Mrs. Renu Todi, Dr. Sagar Dutt, and Vidhi Agarwal

Today, we sit down with three remarkable individuals behind Holding Hands, an initiative under the Samrakshaa Foundation that is quietly transforming the lives of senior citizens in Kolkata. This unique recreation centre provides a nurturing space for emotional healing and mental well-being. Antara: Mrs. Todi, you have worn many hats as a mother, wife, daughter-in-law, and grandmother. Despite fulfilling these roles, you felt something was missing. What led you to start Holding Hands? Mrs. Renu Todi: Thank you, Antara. I have always been deeply involved in my familys life. I raised children, supported my husband, and cared for my grandchildren. I loved it all. But somewhere inside, I felt a void. I realized that many seniors, though materially secure, struggled with loneliness, emotional neglect, and mental fatigue. People often assume that a good house and a loving family are enough. But the truth is that emotional and mental well-being need attention too. Antara: It is often overlooked, is it not? So, you decided to step in and make a change. How did Holding Hands come into being? Mrs. Todi: Yes. It was this realization that drove me. I wanted to build a space where seniors could feel heard, seen, and valued. Holding Hands was born from this vision. It is a centre not just for socializing but for healing. We host activities like dance and music therapy, spiritual discussions, and Vedanta sessions. These are not merely pastimes. They are tools for reconnection, both with oneself and with others. Antara: That is truly inspiring. Dr. Dutt, with over 27 years of experience in homeopathy and Mind Harmonics, how have you contributed to shaping the activities at Holding Hands? Dr. Sagar Dutt: What Renuji and Vidhi have initiated is exceptional. As a practitioner of Mind Harmonics, I focus on aligning mind and body for holistic health. Emotional care for the elderly is vastly underestimated. At Holding Hands, I ensure our sessions, whether it is meditation, guided reflection, or music, are designed to bring emotional balance and inner peace. Antara: Vidhi, you lost your parents during the COVID-19 pandemic. How has that personal loss shaped your journey with Holding Hands? Vidhi Agarwal: It was a deeply painful time. Losing both parents left me with an emptiness I could not explain. When Renu Aunty shared her vision, I felt an instant connection. It gave me a way to channel my grief into something meaningful. I now see every elderly member here as my own parent. The love I lost, I now pour into their lives. It has been healing for them and for me. Antara: You are also a certified life coach specializing in visualization and manifestation. How do these practices benefit the seniors? Vidhi Agarwal: Positive thinking can be life-changing. I guide them through visualizations, encouraging them to see themselves as joyful, active, and at peace. Many seniors arrive feeling helpless or forgotten. Over time, I have watched their energy shift. They become more hopeful and more alive. We also promote physical activities, which greatly support their emotional and mental health. Antara: What is the atmosphere like during your sessions? Vidhi Agarwal: We begin with a small chant and a powerful quote for discussion. Everyone contributes, and the room fills with heartfelt stories, laughter, and even tears. It is a sacred space of sharing and support. We incorporate sound therapy, painting, and moments of quiet reflection too. It is more than therapy. It is community, connection, and care. Antara: It seems Holding Hands is not just a centre but a sanctuary. How do volunteers add to this experience? Dr. Dutt: Our volunteers are the heartbeat of this initiative. Their selfless service creates the environment where change happens. Mrs. Todi: Absolutely. We are so grateful. Their presence reminds us that compassion and community can heal what medicine cannot. They do not just assist. They uplift. It is a beautiful exchange of love. Antara (closing remarks): Listening to your stories, I am moved by the sincerity of your efforts and the deep impact it has created. Holding Hands reminds us that love, respect, and emotional support are timeless needs. Thank you for rebuilding lives, one gentle hand at a time.
