People in hilly areas of Salem district get new currencies at doorstep

SALEM: The postal department comes to the aid of villagers living atop the Shervarayon Hills in Salem district, by issuing new currencies to them in mobile vans. The mobile van team will distribute currencies worth Rs10 lakh worth every day. Postal inspector of Attur post office Venkatesan, issued currencies worth Rs9.59 lakh to 270 villagers. "More than 600 villagers have exchanged their old currencies for new," the officials said.Similarly, another mobile team visited Karumandurai, Yethapur and its surrounding hamlets to issue new currencies. According to postal department officials, the villagers did not have any facility to operate ATMs or bank accounts in their hamlets.

According to postal department officials, the villagers did not have any facility to operate ATMs or bank accounts in their hamlets."While banking facilities and ATMs are available in the cities, the residents of Shervarayon had been left in the lurch," said K Jayaseelan , assistant superintendent of Salem east postal department.The mobile van team led by Jayaseelan, will visit all the hamlets including Yercaud, Kuravankadu, Kombuthookki, Muluvi, Karadiyur, Surakkapatti and Kolakoor villages atop Shervarayon hills.According to postal department officials, there are hundreds of workers working in coffee estates in these hamlets. "They will have to forgo a day's wages to reach the nearest town to get legal tender," Jayaseelan said. The mobile van team will distribute currencies worth Rs10 lakh worth every day.
