Shillong: The South West Khasi Hills district administration has ordered a probe into the reasons behind the unnatural death of fishes and river snakes, found floating on the Kynshi River at Ranikor recently.The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board and the Superintendent of Fisheries are conducting separate investigations regarding this and reports are expected to be submitted soon, deputy commissioner of South West Khasi Hills district Isawanda Laloo said."Food safety officers have also been deployed at villages close to the river to make sure that the villagers do not consume the dead fish," the DC said.Residents of Rilang Village, through which the river passes, said that the dead fish were first seen floating after the untimely showers on March 31.The Khasi Students' Union ( KSU ) has alleged that the exploratory drilling for uranium near the upstream of the river is the reason behind the damage to aquatic life.However, officials have ruled out any such possibility and maintained that the facts would come to light after the probe is completed, even as they said that no trace of uranium has been found in the river.The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board has collected samples of the dead fishes and snakes, which will be examined before arriving at a conclusion on the reasons behind the death of aquatic life in the river.Similar instances of dead aquatic life in the river have reportedly been happening since 2012. While multiple probes have been ordered, no headway has been made.
