SHILLONG: The Khasi Authors' Society has decided to organize a rally on Friday to demand constitutional recognition of the Khasi language . The public rally will be held from Madan Iewrynghep, commonly known as Fire Brigade ground, to Malki ground where a public address will be held on the issue."On behalf of the Khasi Authors' Society, I would like to inform you about our ongoing struggle since 1979 for the recognition of Khasi language in the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution ," general secretary of the society, Ronald Peel Kharshiing, said in a media statement issued here this evening. "Khasi has been accorded the associate official language status through a state legislation in 2005. The Khasi language has been offered for higher studies at the University of Calcutta and Gauhati University since the pre-independence period. At the North Eastern Hill University , it is taught up to the PhD level," he added."We have now adopted certain strategies to convince the Centre of our demand. Holding the public rally will help us articulate our demand," Kharshiing said.
