Congress unhappy with DD Lapang's appointment

A senior UDP leader said, "A person of Lapang's stature cannot be sidelined like the Congress had done. SHILLONG: A day after former chief minister DD Lapang was appointed chief advisor to the Conrad Sangma government, the opposition Congress criticized the move and many others expressed surprise over the elevation of an octogenarian. Therefore, this is the right move." However, the National People's Party (NPP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP), both of which are constituents of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, welcomed the move.Slamming the MDA government for the appointment, Congress said Lapang had quit the Grand Old Party as it was no longer in power and the former CM was hungry for perks and position. Congress legislator Zenith Sangma maintained that the entire episode, starting from Lapang's resignation to his appointment as the chief advisor to the MDA government, was pre-planned.However, NPP president of Meghalaya, WR Kharlukhi, said, "A person of his stature must be respected and the position has been given to him out of respect since he is a veteran."
