SHILLONG: Leader of the opposition in the Meghalaya assembly, Mukul Sangma , on Tuesday said the state government should come out with a clear policy on dealing with terror outfits and surrender of militants.Accusing the state government of being complicit in 'politico-militant nexus,' Mukul expressed surprise over chief minister Conrad Sangma saying that he did not know the details regarding the recent 'surrender' of Cherishterfiled Thangkhiew, the self-styled 'general secretary' of the outlawed Khasi outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC). He had come overground recently."There is complete disconnect between the chief minister and his cabinet ministers," Mukul said, referring to deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong who had facilitated Thangkhiew's coming overground and had also officially received him."Where are the weapons?" he demanded to know, questioning as to why the HNLC leader had not surrendered any."Were the standard operation procedures followed?" he asked.He added that it was not clear as to who in the present government was authorized to deal with militants. "The present government is not cautious in its approach towards militants," Mukul said. He added that the homecoming of rebels should be done in accordance with the set guidelines and rules or else banned outfits could misuse the government machinery itself. tnn
