Army hands over Rs 75 lakh to family of martyr

SHILLONG: Lieutenant general DS Ahuja, general officer commanding, 101 Area, handed over cheques of Rs 75 lakh as terminal benefits from the Army to the family members of the late Major David Manlun at his home here on Thursday. The cheques were presented at a simple event organized at the martyr's house in the Happy Valley locality of the city in the presence of several military and civilians."Major Manlun, laid down his life in the highest traditions of the Army, while leading an Army operation on June 6, 2017 against three militants of the outlawed Ulfa (I) in Nagaland's Mon district bordering Myanmar ," Lt Gen Ahuja said.Major David Manlun, 32, was commissioned into the 1st Battalion of the Naga Regiment in March 2010. He was posted in Nagaland with 164 Infantry Battalion TA (NAGA) since 2014. The unmarried martyr is survived by his parents and three siblings. His father is a retired subedar from the Assam Regiment, his elder brother is serving with the Assam Regiment in Shillong, his only sister is married to an Army officer and his youngest brother is studying in college.The General Officer stated that an additional amount of Rs 40 lakh - including the Centre's ex gratia grant - would be released shortly to the family. The process for release of the state government's ex gratia grant of Rs 7.5 lakh has also been initiated."This is a humble token of our homage to the martyr. A person's life cannot be quantified in terms of money," Lt Gen Ahuja said, adding that the family of the late soldier would receive more assistance from the Army. "He (David) laid down his life in keeping with the highest traditions of the Army for protecting the nation," Lt. Gen. Ahuja said, adding that the life of the young soldier was an example of courage and patriotism.
