Shimla: After a wait of around 14 months, Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla has finally got a new vice-chancellor. Professor Sikander Kumar, who teaches in the economics department in HPU and is also the state president of BJP’s scheduled caste (SC) unit, was appointed as the 26th vice-chancellor of the university on Friday.Professor A D N Bajpai had completed his tenure as vice-chancellor on May 25, 2017. No regular appointment was made for the post after that and pro vice-chancellor professor Rajender Singh Chauhan remained the officiating VC. On Wednesday, the search committee had shortlisted Kumar’s name along with two others and sent it for approval to the state government. Officiating Himachal governor Kaptan Singh Solanki had approved Kumar’s appointment for the job on Thursday.Hailing from Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, Kumar has been engaged in teaching, research and extension work for about three decades. He has published three books - Statistical Methods, Micro Economics and Himalayan Economics. He has published one journal and 31 research papers. He has attended 110 seminars, workshops and conferences and supervised and undertaken 25 major project reports and guided 17 PhD students along with 52 MPhil students, 63 MA business economics students were also guided by him for writing projects.The professor was also the chairman of the economic association of Himachal.
