SHIMLA: Sirmaur district administration is working on an initiative with dual aim of supporting women self-help groups, and making inexpensive sanitary napkin readily available in in the rural areas. Sirmaur deputy commissioner Lalit Jain had worked to provide napkin manufacturing machines and training to use them and the first such unit started functioning in village Navada near Ponta Sahib on Saturday.“Though there are a number of programmes that aim to provide sanitary napkins to young girls, the coverage amongst the rural women was dismal. We felt that once sanitary napkin making becomes a profitable business for a group of local ladies, they would not only use themselves but also motivates their peers,” said Lalit Jain.He said that administration has started a pilot project involving eight women groups, headed by a mahila mandal pradhan. The village mahila mandal bhawan is being used for this micro unit and project cost of Rs 3 lakh was arranged by the district administration.
