Avalanche hits 15 houses in Pangi village of Himachal

Manali: At least 15 houses were buried under a massive avalanche in remote Sural village in Pangi valley of Himachal Pradesh at about 7.30pm on Friday. It would be difficult for authorities to carry out recce of Sural village at night.Three houses were damaged by another avalanche in Yangthang village of Lahaul on Friday. While residents’ had a miraculous escape, their cattle’s fate remains unknown.As there was fresh snowfall, all residents were inside their low-floor houses when avalanche struck the village. The whole area is getting heavy snowfall which has triggered avalanches. The avalanche has buried our houses.

Manali: At least 15 houses were buried under a massive avalanche in remote Sural village in Pangi valley of Himachal Pradesh at about 7.30pm on Friday. While residents’ had a miraculous escape, their cattle’s fate remains unknown.As there was fresh snowfall, all residents were inside their low-floor houses when avalanche struck the village. The houses were not damaged as they had been designed to carry the burden of snow.Sural panchayat pradhan Neema Thakur said over phone that all residents managed to escape death. “We have taken shelter in a neighbouring village. The avalanche has buried our houses. We do not know what happened to our domestic animals. I have informed our SDM at Killar for immediate help,” she said.Sural Valley of Pangi, about 25km from administrative headquarters, Killar, in Chamba district is known for receiving very heavy snowfall and massive avalanches. The avalance this time affected the villagers living in steep valley.Sural lies in the middle of Kishtwar in J&K and Lahaul Valley of Himachal and is left cut off from rest of the country after heavy snowfall. The tribal valley gets heavy snow and has limited phone connectivity. It would be difficult for authorities to carry out recce of Sural village at night.Three houses were damaged by another avalanche in Yangthang village of Lahaul on Friday.
