SHIMLA: Senior police and intelligence officials from Northern Region in a meeting have recommended some institutionalized mechanism for the sharing of information in the region right up to lowest level of organization to thwart any anti national activity . For effective information sharing platform, officials have stressed on the need of making optimum use of information technology During the meeting the participants felt the need of making some changes in the existing law. They also felt the need to have some control on the social media as these days social media is being misused to increase radicalization especially amongst youngsters. Besides, the discussion was also held about developing methods to stop online frauds , misuse of cyberspace and abuse of social media.The second meeting of Northern Region Police Coordination Committee, which is a high powered committee and makes recommendations to Government of India, was held in Shimla on Friday . The meeting was attended by senior police officers from J&K, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, UP, Delhi, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh.Senior officers from Central Armed Police forces including BSF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB, CISF, NSG and RPF besides officers from Central Police Organisation including NIA, CBI, NCRB, NCB and BPR&D and officials from central intelligence agencies also attended the meeting. Himachal Pradesh IGP Zahur Haider Zaidi coordinated the meeting while Himachal Pradesh, DGP, Sanjay Kumar chaired it.While holding discussion on terror related issues, officials also deliberated on presence of refugees in Northern India, especially Rohingyas in J&K and Haryana, and its implications. It was discussed to have a mechanism to check foreigners especially those overstaying their visas.As illicit drug trade has become a major cause of concern countrywide, officials suggested to have effective investigation in cases of recovery of illicit drugs and increased thrust on financial investigation in order to seize properties gained from drug trade.Officials also discussed the methods to check involvement of foreigners in drug trade and sharing of intelligence reports to reduce trans-border movement of drugs. As youngsters are falling prey to drugs, it was also discussed to have effective methods to decrease drug abuse especially amongst college students.The meeting also suggested increasing coordination and information among various law enforcement agencies. It was also decided that regular inter-state and multi-organisational meetings of police officers will take place at lower levels, especially at the level of range inspector Generals and District SPs.
