Hitesh Sharma wins first national Himalayan Autocross rally

MANALI: Hitesh Sharma from Manali became the overall winner of the first national Himalayan Autocross rally that was organized on challenging dirt track of the country designed by a group of rally enthusiasts. Hitesh Sharma was the overall winner in 4X4 extreme category. Over 20 professional racers participated in 4X4 category, 14 rallyists with cars, four in diesel category and 26 in motorbike category. Last year, the organizers had accepted entries only from Himachal rallyists to promote the sport among the local youth. "We had men, women, veterans, professional racers and even a novice taking part in different races in car, 4X4 extreme and motorbike categories.

In all, 74 participants took part in the two-day rally.The organizers of Himalayan Xtreme Sports Association are now planning to develop infrastructure to host international event in the coming years. Last year, the organizers had accepted entries only from Himachal rallyists to promote the sport among the local youth. This is the only dirt track for rally in Himachal having a length of over 2.5kms and spread over 50 bigha of private land at Patlikuhl, 20km from Manali."We had men, women, veterans, professional racers and even a novice taking part in different races in car, 4X4 extreme and motorbike categories. Hitesh Sharma was the overall winner in 4X4 extreme category. Sahil Khanna clocked the lowest time in car category and Amit Kapoor finished first in motorbike category," said Pintu Sood, one of the organizers.Country's top rallyist Suresh Rana, who has proven his mettle on extreme roads of Himalayas, deserts of Rajasthan and slippery roads of south India, has been teaching young rallyists the art and tricks of the trade. He even designed the track, which has hurdles like river crossing, dirt, sand, gravel, boulders, sharp turns, slush and jumps."Though the entry is open for all, our first preference is rallyist from Himachal. We have worked on the safety of drivers and viewers on the track. This track is undoubtedly the most beautiful but also challenging," he said.Not only young men but even women are showing interest in the rally. "We had four ladies who took part in Himalayan Autocross and six veterans, who were above 40, among participants. Over 20 professional racers participated in 4X4 category, 14 rallyists with cars, four in diesel category and 26 in motorbike category. We have given chance to new entrants and had a special novice category this time," said Veer Chatrath, another organizer.
