JK shivers, more rains-snow in next 24 hours

Srinagar: Shivering under the intense cold weather in Jammu and Kashmir, some areas in Valley witnessed seasons coldest night temperature fall to minus 6.8 degree Celsius on Saturday, the Meteorological (MeT) department has predicted more snow and rain fall in next 24 hours. Hilly regions of erstwhile Doda, higher reaches of Reasi and Poonch in Jammu province have been subjected to severe cold conditions with normal life adversely affected by interior roads blockades and snapping of communication with the divisional HQ at Jammu.

Hilly regions of erstwhile Doda, higher reaches of Reasi and Poonch in Jammu province have been subjected to severe cold conditions with normal life adversely affected by interior roads blockades and snapping of communication with the divisional HQ at Jammu. “This type of Cold conditions will last for some more days. And we are expecting snow and rainfall in valley with in upcoming 24 hours” MeT officials said, adding that “upper reaches of valley may witness heavy snow, while moderate to low in plains”. Officials told that, the snow and rainfall might affect visibility, but will improve and help in regaining the normal temperature. Kashmir valley witnessed chilling fall of night temperature and freezing of water bodies including drinking water taps and supply lines were frosted added problems to public. The 40-days long coldest period Chilla Kalan which began on 21-Dec will and remains till 31 Jan. Meanwhile amid snow fall prediction, traffic police has issued a plan for Srinagar-Jammu National highway. Keeping in view the condition of road especially, between Udhampur – Ramsoo, only one way movement of heavy vehicles is possible and feasible on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. In view of the above and keeping in view the safety of the commuters and subject to fair weather and good condition of road the following traffic plan shall be observed on Srinagar – Jammu NHW tomorrow on16.01.2017. Movement of HMVs (excluding Trailers and multi-axle vehicles) including of Convoys of Army, BSF, CRPF etc. shall be allowed from Srinagar towards Jammu side in a regulated manner. Movement of all such type of vehicles shall be allowed from Levdora, Qazigund from 0800 hours upto 1300 hours only. No movement of HMVs including that of convoys of Army, BSF, and CRPF etc. shall be allowed from Jammu towards Srinagar side on 16.01.2017 under any circumstances. However, in order to facilitate the passengers, movement of LMVs and light passenger vehicles shall be allowed both ways. As such movement of all such vehicles (excluding buses and Tempo Travellers) shall be allowed from Nagrota, Jammu towards Srinagar side from 0500 hours up to 1400 hours and at Udhampur up to 1530 hours only. However, the movement of vehicles bound for Doda and Kishtwar only shall be allowed at Nagrota up to 1500 hours and at Udhampur up to 1630 hours. Further, movement of all types of LMVs and passenger vehicles from Srinagar towards Jammu side shall be allowed at Levdora, Qazigund from 0800 hours up to 1500 hours only. Strict implementation of cut off timings shall be ensured for hassle free movement of traffic on NHW. Commuters intending to travel between Srinagar and Jammu on 16.01.2017 are advised to check the weather and road condition before starting their journey. The administration claimed that all the districts in Kashmir Valley and hilly districts in Jammu Region have constituted control rooms in their respective areas to look after the public grievances and meet out the weather related issues.
