Ghulam Nabi Azad expresses grief over deaths in Jammu and Kashmir cloudburst

NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad today expressed deep sorrow and grief over the death of six persons in the cloudburst at Thathri town in Jammu and Kashmir 's Doda district.Eleven people were injured in the incident and several shops and houses were damaged. "My heart goes to the families who have lost their kith and kins in the devastation and I sympathise with the injured people," he said.The Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha urged the Jammu and Kashmir government and Doda administration to immediately arrange for relief and rehabilitation for the people affected by the cloudburst.Ghulam Nabi Azad called for adequate compensation for the families of those who had lost their lives or were injured in the tragedy.The Congress leader said the traffic on the road connecting Kishtwar district to Gundoh sub-district, which passes through the town and is a life-line, should be cleared immediately.The flash floods triggered by the cloudburst wreaked havoc in the town, inundating vast areas along the Batote- Kishtwar National Highway and washing away half a dozen houses.Though 11 people have been rescued, many others are feared trapped under debris and the administration fears the toll is likely to rise.Six houses, two shops and a school have been damaged in the flash floods that were triggered by the cloudburst at 2.20 am.
