SMC drive to check milk adulteration

Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) food department officials collected samples of loose milk from sellers to check contamination and adulteration in it. Generally loose milk has lot of water and even chemicals in it. An officer of Sumul said milk with less SNF has no nutritional value. More than 85 per cent of milk sold in Surat is that of Sumul whereas unorganized sector sells 80,000 litres of it on a daily basis.“Milk samples from people were taken on road to check adulteration in it. The milk will be banned if solid not fat (SNF) content is found to be less than 8.5 per cent in it.

Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) food department officials collected samples of loose milk from sellers to check contamination and adulteration in it. They collected five samples from people who were on their way to supply milk to households in different areas of the city on Saturday. The milk will be banned if solid not fat (SNF) content is found to be less than 8.5 per cent in it. More than 85 per cent of milk sold in Surat is that of Sumul whereas unorganized sector sells 80,000 litres of it on a daily basis.“Milk samples from people were taken on road to check adulteration in it. SNF content in the samples will be known after their analysis. Generally loose milk has lot of water and even chemicals in it. Adulteration in milk will be known after we get analysis report from our laboratory,” said Dr Aashish Naik, chief medical officer, SMC.It is estimated that in Surat city 11 lakh litres of milk is provided by Sumul in packs to people and another 1.6 lakh litres also come from another organized sector while 80,000 litres is supplied daily by unorganized sector.The food inspector said, “Chances of adulteration are more in the 80,000 litres of milk that come from the unorganized sector.” It has been found that many loose milk sellers generally add water, urea or other chemicals to make profit. An officer of Sumul said milk with less SNF has no nutritional value.
