Bharuch pounded by 114mm rainfall chemist electrocuted

R G Kanungo, superintending engineer, SSNNL told TOI: "Water level is constantly rising due to good rainfall in near Omkareshwar which is called as intervening area. The level has increased by 18 cm and on Friday it reached 109.86 m. Before few months, the water level in the dam had touched the historic low of 104 m. Many houses in low lying areas of old Bharuch were also submerged. The victim Diptesh Shah was trying to repair the unit of his split air-conditioner (AC) on the terrace which was full of water. As soon as he stepped in the water, he was electrocuted.

Bharuch/Surat: Normal life was paralysed in Bharuch and most areas marooned as the town was pounded by 114 mm rainfall in 24 hours ending Friday 6am.A 49-year-old chemist, who was to fly to Australia on July 21, died of electrocution at his house in Pritam Society on Friday. The victim Diptesh Shah was trying to repair the unit of his split air-conditioner (AC) on the terrace which was full of water. As soon as he stepped in the water, he was electrocuted. The electric shock was so intense that his right leg got partially burnt. Shah was staying alone in the bungalow as he wife had gone to Australia to see their two sons who are studying there.Neighbour rushed to his house and tried to call Daxin Gujarat Vij Nigam Limited (DGVCL) office but they were diverted to different numbers as the area comes under Maktampur. It took about more than 20 minutes to shut the power from DGVCL.Meanwhile, several areas and residential societies in Furja, Panchbatti, Kasak underbridge, Sewashram Road, Link Road were flooded. Many houses in low lying areas of old Bharuch were also submerged. A two-storey vacant house located in Bhutnath Falia collapsed early in morning.The route of Jagannath Yatra to be held on Sunday was badly damaged as large potholes were visible after the rain water receded.Surrounding villages like Palej, Tankaria, Nabipur, Parkhet and Vilayat were disconnected with Bharuch for few hours due to heavy waterlogging on the roads. The Bhukhi creek was overflowing in Vilayat and water gushed into Grasim Industries’ viscose fibre and chemical Plant, which later on receded.Water level steadily rising at Sardar SarovarBharuch/Surat: The water level in Sardar Sarovar dam at Kevadia Colony is steadily rising after heavy rainfall in the catchment area in Madhya Pradesh.The dam recieved nearly 10,400 cusec water.
