Very heavy rains lash Vasda of Navsari district authorities gear up for evacuation

District collector Dr MD Modiya said, “Apart from heavy rains in Vasada and Chikli , there are 159 mm of rains in the upstream from where Kaveri and Ambika rivers flow and reach here. in eight hours, by 4 pm on Tuesday, while Chikli recorded 100 mm of rains in eight hours . We might be shifting more people to safer pastures by late evening if the need arises .” This has also swollen the water levels here. SURAT: Following very heavy rains in Vasda and Chikli talukas of Navsari district, authorities have shifted 390 people from two villages in Chikli and 85 people from Vasda to safer places.In Vasda, the embankment of lake Vadbari is likely to erode and hence, administration is preparing to shift more people living around it.Vasda recorded very heavy rains, measuring up to 222 mmTwo dams built on Kaveri river, named Juj dam and Keliya dam, supplying water to both these talukas are overflowing by nearly 80 cm above the dam level.The level in Kaveri river is pegged at 17 feet against 19 feet of danger level at present.District administration has sounded alert to the low lying areas of these two talukas and asked people to be ready for evacuation if required.
