Fear of floods looms large over Parvat village

This patch in Parvat village does not have a protection wall. Umarpada taluka in Surat district received heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours throwing normal life out of gear. The water level is continuously rising and we fear that the areas could be flooded by late night. The creek has been receiving water due to heavy rainfall in its catchment areas in Bardoli and Tapi. Water level in Mithi Khadi swelled to about 7.30 metres following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas, putting the administration of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on an alert.

Surat: Fear of flash floods looms large over Parvat village in Limbayat zone of Surat following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Mithi Khadi in the last 24 hours until 6pm on Saturday.Vambay Awas and Saraswati Vidyalaya were flooded as water from Mithi Khadi spilled over in the absence of a protection wall.Rain lashed parts of South Gujarat, including Valsad, Navsari and Surat districts, during the day. Umarpada taluka in Surat district received heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours throwing normal life out of gear. Water level in Mithi Khadi swelled to about 7.30 metres following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas, putting the administration of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on an alert. The danger level of Mithi khadi is 7.50 metres.Meanwhile, the district authorities said Umarpada taluka received 316mm rainfall in the last 24 hours and that there were no reports of any casualty or loss of property.Vambay Awas and Saraswati Vidhyalay in Parvat village have been waterlogged because of the rising water level in Mithi Khadi. Authorities feel that the situation will turn to what it was a week ago when the areas were flooded, impacting more than 1,000 families.SMC executive engineer, Limbayat zone, Bhairav Desai told TOI, “We are keeping a very close watch on water level in Mithi Khadi. The creek has been receiving water due to heavy rainfall in its catchment areas in Bardoli and Tapi. We have started distributing food packets to residents of waterlogged Vambay Awas. The water level is continuously rising and we fear that the areas could be flooded by late night. This patch in Parvat village does not have a protection wall. We expect to complete the wall project only by next year.”
