Surat to celebrate World Organ Donation Day

Surat: Despite Diamond City not having transplant facility, it had topped in organ donation in Gujarat in 2017. We hope our presentations will help change their views on organ donation and they too join the movement. Its volunteers say many people don’t go for organ donation due to religious beliefs and lack of awareness. Organ donation percentage in developed countries is good with Spain leading with 34 while in India it is just 0.5.Donate Life, a non-government organization, has been working in the field of organ donation for the past 13 years. The NGO together with other organizations will hold many programmes to celebrate World Organ Donation Day in the city on Monday.Donate Life founder Nilesh Mandlewala said, “We organized as many as 15 programmes in Anand and Kheda districts to create awareness about organ donation among people recently.

In 2018, 34 kidneys, 15 livers, two hearts and 30 eyes so far have been donated from Surat. Organ donation percentage in developed countries is good with Spain leading with 34 while in India it is just 0.5.Donate Life, a non-government organization, has been working in the field of organ donation for the past 13 years. Its volunteers say many people don’t go for organ donation due to religious beliefs and lack of awareness. Over 1.5 lakh people die in road accidents and several others due to brain stroke and brain haemorrhage every year. If organs of all these people are donated, those suffering from serious ailments would get a new lease of life definitely.”
