SMC project wins global award for green mobility

Surat: The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has bagged the Sustainable Cities and Human Settlements Awards (SCAHSA) under the category Global Model for Green Mobility. The award are conferred by Global Forum on Sustainable Development, a body associated with the United Nations (UN).SMC’s project SARAL (Safe, Accessible, Reliable, Advanced and Low Carbon Emitting ) has bagged the award, which will be given during the annual session of Global Forum on Sustainable Development Bangkok, Thailand on October 30-31. We would like to develop Surat not only as a dream city but as a city which is sustainable to all future challenges.”He added that SMC was the first municipal body to incorporate environmental charge to raise standards “We are the first city to have a green mobility that is globally recognised recognized,” said SMC commissioner. The civic SMC had made a presentation of its mass transport system which showed integrated plans and smart solutions for the future of transportation in India and other developing countries.It also showed a safe, accessible and reliable way, which has achieved comprehensive economic, social and environmental benefits.Commenting on the award municipal commissioner M Thennarasan said, “This is the global recognition of our work and it gives us lot of inspiration to keep doing good for the city.
