Rumours about unclaimed boat spread panic in Valsad district

Surat: Panic gripped residents of Palghar district of Maharashtra and Valsad district of Gujarat after rumours spread about some terrorists having landed at the seashore near Dahanu on Monday night. The rumours about an unclaimed boat anchored on coast and four unidentified persons firing from sophisticated firearms had spread like wildfire in these districts of the two neighbouring states. Maharashtra and Gujarat police carried out a combing operation but were not able to find any unclaimed boat or truth in the rumours about firing.The rumours started to spread after some persons claimed that they had noticed four persons near Chikhla village of Dahanu taluka in Palghar district with weapons. “Police kept a close watch at the entry points but no suspicious person was noticed,” said Sunil Joshi, superintendent of police, Valsad. They also claimed that unidentified persons had fired from their weapons.

Local people alerted Gholvad police station who started investigations into the rumours.Police were also informed by some fishermen that they had spotted an unclaimed boat near the coast but former didn’t find any.Valsad police have strengthened checking at entry points of Gujarat along the border with Maharashtra. “Police kept a close watch at the entry points but no suspicious person was noticed,” said Sunil Joshi, superintendent of police, Valsad.
