Surat: The crime branch of city police got first its woman police inspector when A K Chauhan was appointed as one of its members on the first day of Navratri on Wednesday. Police commissioner Satish Sharma took this decision at a time when the city is regularly seen grappling these days with serious crimes against minor girls. City police are yet to detect a four-year-old girl’s brutal murder in Pandesara whose body was found on August 7 near Vadod and also that of two-year-old minor’s rape in Udhna on September 17.Chauhan, who is posted as police inspector in Adajan police station, has been appointed on a vacant post. City crime branch has four posts of police inspectors with two officers namely P L Chaudhary and B N Dave having been recently promoted to the rank of deputy superintendents of police.“We didn’t have a woman officer in crime branch. Considering serious crimes against women and children, we needed a woman officer to deal with them. Mostly crime branch handles cases that have far-reaching consequences. A woman officer can perform better in cases which are related to women and children,” Sharma told TOI.Police inspector A S Patil will replace Chauhan at Adajan police station. He was recently transferred to the city from Navsari.Chauhan was recruited as police sub-inspector in 2008 and promoted to the rank of police inspector in 2016. She has also worked with crime branch in Vadodara city as police sub-inspector of cyber cell.
