Budding fashion designerrsquos heart beats in young masonrsquos body

Surat: The heart of Jhanvi Tejas Patel, 21, a budding fashion designer, declared dead in a city hospital, was flown from Surat to Mulund in Mumbai in 107 minutes and transplanted into a 26-year-old mason on Tuesday. She was admitted to Sanjivani Hospital and then INS Hospital where the doctors declared her dead on November 19. The heart of the donor reached Mumbai from Surat in 107 minutes through the green corridor created by police for the ambulance. His heart functioned with only 15 per cent capacity which dropped to two per cent recently.

Surat: The heart of Jhanvi Tejas Patel, 21, a budding fashion designer, declared dead in a city hospital, was flown from Surat to Mulund in Mumbai in 107 minutes and transplanted into a 26-year-old mason on Tuesday. This was the 21st case of heart donation from Surat in the past 35 months.Jhanvi had suffered a serious head injury when she fell off from the dicky of the car being driven by a relative on the night of November 17 near Arista Building in the city. She was admitted to Sanjivani Hospital and then INS Hospital where the doctors declared her dead on November 19. Representatives of Donate Life, a non-government organization, approached Jhanvi’s father Tejas Patel, a jeweller, and mother Amita Patel who agreed to donate her organs. Tejas Patel said, “We are happy that our daughter’s organs will give a new lease of life to so many people.”Doctors of Fortis Hospital, Mulund harvested Jhanvi’s heart and transplanted into Lalji K Gedia, a resident of Surat. The heart of the donor reached Mumbai from Surat in 107 minutes through the green corridor created by police for the ambulance. Lalji was suffering from a heart ailment since 2014. His heart functioned with only 15 per cent capacity which dropped to two per cent recently. He had been on artificial heart support for the past 38 days.Jhanvi’s kidneys and liver were harvested by a team of doctors from Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre, Ahmedabad. Her one kidney was transplanted into Naresh Rajpara, 47, and the other into Rakesh Jha, 42, a resident of Ranchi, Jharkhand. Jigna Vijay Patel, 47, a resident of Ahmedabad, was recipient of Jhanvi’s liver. Her corneas were harvested by Dr Parful Shiroya of Lokdrashti Chakshu Bank for transplantation at a later date.
