Surat: City unit BJP president Nitin Bhajiyawala has also staked his claim to Surat Lok Sabha seat. I expect the party to renominate me as candidate from Surat Lok Sabha constituency.”There are over 16.5 lakh voters in this constituency and majority of them are Saurashtrian Patels. Darshana Jardosh, sitting BJP MP , and five senior party leaders are the other prominent ticket aspirants for this seat. Original Surtis too are in sizeable numbers in Surat Lok Sabha constituency.The party observers will submit a report to BJP Parliamentary Board, which will take a decision on the candidate. BJP should not give ticket to a nominee of any other community.”Nitin Bhajiyawala was reportedly asked by party leadership to contest in 2014, but he had declined.

A three-member team of party observers comprising Bhartsinh Parmar, Bharat Rathod and Bhavna Dave was in the city to meet ticket aspirants and BJP workers from the assembly segments of Surat North, Surat East Former mayor Asmita Shiroya, her husband Dr Praful Shiroya, Karanj MLA Janak Bagdanawala, former mayor Ajay Chokshi and former MLA Kirit Patel also sought ticket to contest as BJP candidate from Surat Lok Sabha constituency.BJP has been choosing only a Surti as its candidate from this seat since past eight elections and never an outsider.Late Kashiram Rana, a minister in AB Vajpayee Government, was elected from this seat six times. The BJP gave ticket to Darshana Jardosh in 2009 and also 2014.A BJP leader told TOI, “If a local Surti is not given ticket to contest from this seat, the party will suffer a jolt. BJP should not give ticket to a nominee of any other community.”Nitin Bhajiyawala was reportedly asked by party leadership to contest in 2014, but he had declined. “It was a different situation then. It was my duty to see that the party wins. But I want to contest this time from Surat Lok Sabha constituency and have sought party ticket,” he said.However, Purnesh Modi, Surat West MLA, who many believe is keen to contest from this seat, said, “I am not a candidate. I am working as in-charge of Bardoli seat. I am not seeking ticket to fight election. My job is to help my party win the Bardoli seat.”Darshana Jardosh said, “I have made a representation before the team of party observers about the work that I had done as an MP in my constituency for the past 10 years.
