Forest department opens up Prabalgad for tourist

NAVI MUMBAI: In order to promote tourism in the rains, the forest department has allowed tourists to visit Prabalgad Fort in Panvel for trekking from Monday.The idea was mooted by Raigad collector and deputy and assistant conservators of forest. Local guides will be given T-shirts and identity cards by the forest department,” he added.The department and committee have installed signboards to create awareness among tourists and visitors about the changes. The joint forest management committee, comprising of villagers, will provide parking facilities and guides for tourists. Only local guides will be allowed to go with trekkers. They have trained 45 villagers as guides.

They have trained 45 villagers as guides. The joint forest management committee, comprising of villagers, will provide parking facilities and guides for tourists. Also, an entry fee will be collected from visitors.Panvel range forest officer Dnyaneshwar Sonawane said, “Following the idea approved by the Raigad collector and deputy and assistant conservators of forest, the joint forest management committee has been assigned to take up various roles. This includes, collection of entry fee, which has been pegged at Rs 20 per person, parking charges (it will vary according to the vehicle) and local guide charges (Rs 50 per person). This will benefit villagers. Accordingly, parking lots, collection points will be developed.”“We have trained 45 villagers as guides. Only local guides will be allowed to go with trekkers. This decision came after cases of trekkers falling off the fort were reported in the last few years. The system will be fully operational by Monday. Local guides will be given T-shirts and identity cards by the forest department,” he added.The department and committee have installed signboards to create awareness among tourists and visitors about the changes. Recently, a group of five who had lost their way at Prabalgad fort in the night were rescued by a team.The Panvel MLA Prashant Thakur said, “While Prabalgad can be opened for visitors, the same yardstick can be applied for Pandavkada by the forest department.”We have trained 45 villagers as guides.
