THANE: Dressed in new sarees, adorned with gold jewellery, green bangles, red bindi and traditional nose ring, married women from Maharashtrian families will celebrate Vat Purnima on Wednesday.A day-long fast will be observed and women will consume only fruits and water, performing a puja of the banyan tree. On this auspicious day, rituals are performed by women who pray for the long life of their husbands.According to legend, Savitri had prayed for the long life of her husband under a banyan tree.So, it is not only considered as holy by Hindus, but also a symbol of stability, permanence and security.Rajeshree Ware, a resident of Waghbil who has been performing this puja since the last 36 years, said, “Women begin the day by praying around a banyan tree. A puja is offered and kumkum , five fruits is offered to the tree after which a cotton thread is tied around its trunk. Later, they take seven rounds around the tree which signifies each birth. This ritual means that the woman wants the same husband in all her seven lives.”While some will pray around the banyan tree or visit a temple, some also perform a puja at home by worshipping a branch of the tree.A resident of Vartak Nagar, Kameshwari Kulkarni, said, “I have been performing the puja at home since the last couple of years. I bring a branch of the banyan tree from the local market, along with five fruits—jackfruit, banana, mango, black grapes and Karwanda. We keep each fruit on a leaf and perform the puja. Later, we give this fruit and leaf to married women as a symbol of blessing and respect.
