Heavy rains cripple Thane, schools shut, office-goers stranded for hours

Thane: The near 104.36 mm rainfall that showered in the lake city since Monday morning completely disrupted the normal routine of residents for major part of the day washing away all claims of being rain ready by the corporation.The disaster management cell of the Thane Corporation informed that as many as 41 spots were inundated throughout the day along with six instances of tree related mishaps and eight cases of nullah and compound wall collapses in various parts of the city among others. Luckily, no casualties or injuries were reported throughout the day.The inconvenience for residents started early Friday after normal traffic flow of vehicles was disturbed and people were either stranded or had to take a long detour to reach their respective destinations due to inundation. Several areas including Vandana, Vitawa, Sahyog Mandir, Vrindawan saw water logging while the inundation on Ghodbunder Road near Gaimukh around 10 am forcing closure of vehicles from travelling between Thane and Ahmedabad highway for few hours, informed inspector Anil Mangle from the Thane traffic police.Laxmi Wani, a resident of Waghbil who was heading towards Goregaon said, “There was water logging from Gaimukh towards Chena creek, the water was almost covering three forth of the car tyre and at places even almost half of it. We were stuck for almost two hours on the stretch. We eventually had to take a detour just before the creek. Many motorists caused further congestion by taking the opposite lane, due to which traffic on both lanes got affected.”While some residents decided to stay home and enjoy the rains, few dared to travel despite the winding traffic snarls. Government offices also saw less attendance on Monday. Aumkar Phadnis, a resident of Shivai Nagar said, “I left my house around 8.30 am on my motorbike to go to my office at Saki Naka. It took me nearly 45 minutes from Teen Hath Naka till the Mulund toll naka due to traffic. The entire stretch is filled with potholes which all the more slowed down the vehicles. A resident of Majiwada, Prajakta Chitnis who was travelling from Viviana mall to Lodha complex said many drivers refused to ply and the one who agreed charged her Rs 100 for the distance of less than two kilometers.Meanwhile, railway commuters also faced inconvenience as the tracks at Kalwa and Thane were submerged in the early part of the day affecting the operations of the Central Railway that was running 15-45 minutes late till evening. The Transharbour line also saw a disruption at Turbhe around 2pm which added to the miseries of the commuters.The incessant rains in the first part of the day compelled many school managements to declare a holiday for the second session.
