MUMBAI: The second merit list for First Year Junior College (FYJC) admissions will be declared on Monday. With over two lakh seats still on offer, the number of seats far outnumbers applicants, but vacancies in top colleges are few and, hence, cut-offs will either drop only marginally or see an increase.Top colleges in the city might continue to remain out of reach for students with a score of less than 90%. For instance, the first cut-off for Arts at St Xavier's College, Fort, was 94.2%, but the college has only eight seats in the open general category for round two."We do not expect to see a drop in cut-offs. In fact, sometimes we see a jump in the second list because the applicant pool is different. In the science stream, the cut-off could be lower by a per cent," said Ashok Wadia, principal, Jai Hind College At V G Vaze College, Mulund, authorities do not expect cut-offs to drop either. The college has less than 15 seats for the open-general category across the three streams.Education officials have urged students to confirm their seats if they get allotted the college listed as top preference. "Students who do not confirm their first preference admissions will have to wait for the first-come-first-serve rounds. That means, they might not get a college of their choice even if their marks are higher than the cut-offs," said an official. As many as 7,000 students did not confirm their admissions despite getting their first preference in the previous round.
