THANE: Motorists heading towards Ahmedabad highway and Western express highway from Ghodbunder (GB) Road were a harried lot on Monday as they were stuck in traffic jam for hours together after a container rammed into a divider and toppled. The incident took place at around 7am on GB Road, leading to a jam. Commuters who used to normally reach within and hour or so to Goregaon took over three hours to reach their destination.Traffic came to a standstill for almost half-an-hour as the authorities were moving the container.“The container rammed into a divider at around 7am on Monday. The driver must have been driving at a high speed. He lost control of the vehicle and while trying not to ram into an auto in front of him he rammed into a divider. The container then turned turtle, blocking two lanes of the road. Due to this motorists were able to use just one lane, leading to traffic congestion. It took the traffic officials almost half-an-hour to clear the road,” said an offical.Meanwhile, motorists had to sweat it out due to this. Most also had to report late to work. “I was heading to Ahmedabad highway at 8am when I got stuck near Gaimukh. However, I was stuck in traffic for over 35 minutes. The jam had reached almost near Waghbil,” said Satish S, a Waghbil resident. Some commuters who were alerted about the congestion by friends and relatives made sure to take a detour. So, many opted to travel by the Eastern Express highway and take the Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) to head towards Western Express Highway. “Our office bus leaves at 7:30am from Teen Haath Naka towards Goregaon via Ghodbunder Road. But due to the congestion, we were stuck in traffic for almost an hour. We then took a detour from Ovala and went via JVLR. But this also didn’t help much as we were stuck near Kopri, Airoli and then again in Powai. Finally, it took me around three hours to reach Goregaon,” said Chinmany Ambardekar, a Naupada resident.Meanwhile, the container driver escaped with minor injuries.
