3 ‘courier boys’ steal valuables worth Rs 3 lakh from Thane home after threatening woman and son

THANE: A 50-year-old woman from Thane was robbed of cash and jewellery of a collective worth of Rs 3 lakh by three men who posed as “courier delivery” boys, on Thursday morning. “When the woman answered the door, the man at the door told her that he got some courier for the flat owner”, said a police officer. For this, the police are scanning footage from closed-circuit television cameras.A few teams of police personnel have been cobbled up to nab the culprits, said the officer. The woman’s family stays on rent in the house. No one else in the family was at home at that time.As she opened the door, the man stepped inside her house and kept a box at the entrance inside the house.

The woman lives in a flat on the ground floor of a building in Louiswadi locality.Around 8 am, the three men knocked at the door while the woman was busy in the kitchen while her son, a 20-something man, was lying on the cot. “When the woman answered the door, the man at the door told her that he got some courier for the flat owner”, said a police officer. The woman’s family stays on rent in the house. No one else in the family was at home at that time.As she opened the door, the man stepped inside her house and kept a box at the entrance inside the house. “While she was waiting to acknowledge receipt of the courier, another who was lying in wait outside, walked towards her son and brandished a knife at him and threatened him not to keep mum,” said the police officer.Just then a third man barged into the house and stuffed a ball of cloth into the woman’s mouth, before raining blows on her. “He then demanded that she hand over the keys to the cupboard. As the petrified woman handed them over, the third man snatched the bunch, walked up to the cupboard and pulled out Rs 48,000 besides jewellery worth more than Rs 2.5 lakh,” said the police officer.All along, the three men kept warning them not to call out for help. “The woman said that the three men threatened to kill them if they screamed for help,” said an official from Wagle Estate police station where a criminal offence has been registered against the unidentified criminals under various sections of the Indian Penal Code The police said they have recorded the statements of the woman and her son and a hunt has been launched to track down the three men. For this, the police are scanning footage from closed-circuit television cameras.A few teams of police personnel have been cobbled up to nab the culprits, said the officer.
