Thane: In a bid to help the elderly when it comes to memory disturbances either due to their age or because of any neurodegenerative diseases, the state-run Civil hospital in Thane has started a ‘memory clinic’ and help the geriatrics to sharpen their memories.The clinic will not only admit in-house patients who would be suffering from any memory related issues, but will also admit anyone coming to the OPD or who voluntarily wants themselves or their relatives to be evaluated. The facility will be provided for free.“The aim to start this memory clinic was to focus on the elderly people when it comes to sharpening their memories. This initiative would also help in early detection of Alzheimer’s, Dementia and other memory elated disorders. As per the records of World Health Organization (WHO) around 50 million people around the globe have Dementia and every year there are nearly 10 million new cases. With the help of the team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers who are appointed at this clinic such patients will be evaluated and accordingly treatment will be given to them. The clinic will be open from 9 am to 1pm, every day,” said Dr Ashok Kamble, additional civil surgeon at Civil hospital.The mental experts at Civil hospital will not only evaluate the patients but even counsel their caretakers so that they could be given adequate attention and even their behaviour could be understood in a better way, as the patients who suffer from Dementia tend to hallucinate, get aggressive, face difficulty doing daily activities, etc.“We will first take the history of the patients and depending on whether the person is suffering from Alzheimer’s, Dementia or any other memory related disorder the treatment will be given. The various treatments would be like – counselling, in some cases medicines will be given or we will focus on focus doing lifestyle modification, behavioural modification or even exercises like solving puzzles etc. will be given to enhance the patient’s memory. Also, the family will be counselled so that they understand the patient’s mental health in a better way,” said Dr Aditya Chevle, psychiatrist at the hospital.The aim to start this memory clinic was to focus on elderly people when it comes to sharpening their memories.
