Man held for stealing gold chains from rly commuters

THANE: A 38-year-old man has been arrested by the Thane railway police for snatching gold chains worth Rs 3 lakh of commuters travelling by locals during peak hours.According to the railway police, M Shaikh used to target commuters either in the morning or evening at any of the suburban stations between Thane and Diwa. The cops have recovered and seized all the stolen booty.

THANE: A 38-year-old man has been arrested by the Thane railway police for snatching gold chains worth Rs 3 lakh of commuters travelling by locals during peak hours.According to the railway police, M Shaikh used to target commuters either in the morning or evening at any of the suburban stations between Thane and Diwa. “The accused used to wait at the platform and scan commuters. Once he would identify his target, he would snatch the victim’s chains while he or she would be trying to board a crowded train,” said senior inspector Rajendra Shirtode at the Thane railway police.Shaikh was nabbed after the railway police activated their network, following a rise in complaints related to chain snatching . The police were on the lookout for the accused. After scanning previous records, they finally arrested Shaikh.Shaikh admitted that he had stolen nearly eight chains in the last one month from unsuspecting passengers. The cops have recovered and seized all the stolen booty. The accused used to steal chains and pass it on to his partner, who is a small-time jeweller in Titwala . Once the loot was sold, they would distribute the money between them. The police have also arrested the the jeweller.The duo has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and have been sent to police custody for the next three days.
