THANE: A sub-inspector from the traffic department was nabbed by the anti-corruption bureau on Friday accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a businessman. The cop demanded the money for providing a clearance certificate. The incident took place at Teen Hath Naka.The complainant, a transporter by profession needed a No Objection Certificate (NOC) in order to transport goods from one city to another. So, he had approached Atmaram Patil (54) for the same at the traffic headquarters but was asked to pay Rs 8,000 against the NOC.“The complainant needed a clearance certificate from the traffic department against getting access of Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC) into the city. But when sub-inspector Patil asked for money against the certificate, the complainant approached us few days back and we laid a trap to arrest him. The deal got fixed at Rs 5,000 and the victim approached Patil near Teen Hath Naka outside the traffic headquarters to hand over the money. As soon as the traffic official accepted the money, we arrested him,” said Salil Bhosle, inspector from anti-corruption bureau, Thane.The police stated the accused resides in Thane and they have even done a house search to check for any more leads on the corruption but they did not come across anything suspicious. Patil was working as a sub-inspector in the traffic department since over a year and he had access to give the NOC to transporters. The police are verifying if the accused has taken bribes from any of the other transporters while handing over the certificates.The accused who was booked under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, has got police custody till Monday.
