Thane: In an attempt to reach out to the academically-weaker Class X and XII students , several schools in the city have already started taking up extra classes and coaching programmes for these kids as the crucial board exams are fast approaching. From holding special classes, arranging for group studies, holding lectures by moderators to conducting extra coaching, schools have a lot up their sleeve for the students in the coming weeks.Snehalata Dev, principal of Symbiosis Convent High School & Junior College of Science, Arts & Commerce, Mumbra, said, “Although our school is re-opening on November 19, we will begin school for the higher class students four days before the scheduled date. We have planned a special program for these students. We will be dividing them into batches of 20 each. Three teachers will be called in specially to help them and provide individual attention to every child. They will also guide them accordingly as per each child’s strength and weakness.”Some schools have come up with the ‘study with a buddy’ concept to ensure that students are well prepared for their upcoming board exams.“Starting next week, we will be mentoring students and will focus more on every child’s weaker points. The concept of studying with buddies has proven to be beneficial not only to the senior students, but also the junior ones. This helps them develop a special bond as well. Since Class X students have to learn the basics in Class IX itself, the group studies will be useful to both the classes,” said Surendra Dighe from Saraswati Mandir Trust. While many schools are making the most of the Diwali vacation to reach out to students who need help, some will be taking up extra classes in December during school hours itself.Shilpa Jejurkar, principal of Arunodaya Public School, said, “Since kids want to enjoy their Diwali vacation, we have not arranged for any special classes during the holidays. From December, we will be organizing a weekly one hour remedial class. We will divide the students in batches of three as per their percentage. The high scorers will be given some tough questions to crack, while the others will be coached to reach their maximum potential. During this period, we will be bringing moderators and examiners from the board who can discuss specific topics with the students and can tell them how they can achieve the maximum marks.”Starting next week, we will be mentoring students and will focus more on every child’s weaker points.
