Two cousins sneak into lake on boat at night, stranded for 4 hrs

They decided to go boating on a whim.“The boys untied a pedal boat anchored to the jetty and had hardly pedalled around 50ft into the deep waters, when one of the fans propelling the boat malfunctioned,” said an fire officer.

The two boys were not carrying their cellphones so they could not call anyone for help, said officials.According to officials from the Mumbra fire brigade, Salim Shamim (22), who lives in Vashi, was visiting his cousin in Kausa area on Monday. Around 11pm, after an altercation with their families, the duo left home and reached the lake. They decided to go boating on a whim.“The boys untied a pedal boat anchored to the jetty and had hardly pedalled around 50ft into the deep waters, when one of the fans propelling the boat malfunctioned,” said an fire officer. The boats were not maintained as the boating facility at the lake had been shut for quite some time, said locals. “When the boat refused to move despite them pedalling hard, the two boys panicked. They screamed for help but no one was around as it was late at night,” said the fire officer.Luckily, around 3am, an unidentified man was passing by the lake and heard their cries for help. The man informed the police, who, in turn, alerted the Mumbra fire brigade and the regional disaster management cell. The rescue teams rushed to the lake and used another boat to tug the pedal boat to the jetty and rescued the two boys.“When our team reached the spot, we saw the two boys huddled in the pedal boat. We managed to bring them out to safety,” said sub-officer H Diwate from the Mumbra fire station. “We later handed them over to the police.”The Thane police confirmed the incident and said the boys were sent home after being given a warning.
